A Long-Awaited Day
Wednesday, August 4, 2010
We’re finally in Tongling City in the Anhui Province, the heart of our China journey, having arrived with hopes of discovering any thread of information that will give our daughters insight into their origin. Our days have been remarkably full, packed with anticipation, fun, joy, disappointment, and ultimately resolution (the events of the day will continue in another post).
I’m not one blessed with the gift of textual storytelling. As you’re well aware folks, my communication tool is the photographic image …

Sophie and Maddie's first home, the Tongling Social Welfare Institute (SWI)

The building where they were cared for in 2000. Today, the children of Tongling SWI are primarily special needs kids.

Associate Director Mrs. Chen leads us to the conference room.

The Director Mr. Gao and Associate Director Mrs. Chen answer general questions about Tongling SWI.

Mr. Gao and Mrs. Chen view the albums we donated to the orphanage with photos of Sophie and Maddie through the years.

Sophie with two of the nannys who took care of her (see earlier post photo)

Sophie later told us that her eyes watered when she reunited with her nannys.

Maddie with her original nanny. The joy of reunion brought tears to both.

The nannys were happy to know the girls are loved and have a good life.

At last, the files.

The official statement to the authorities from the person who found Sophie.

Maddie listens intently as Erin, our attentive guide, translates her 'finding' statement.

Maddie finally at her 'finding spot' - the front gate of the Tongling SWI.

A celebratory lunch with the gracious directors of the orphanage.
