In between assisting me with lightstands, strobes, and power cords, fellow photographer and friend Xavier Bailey snapped these behind-the-scenes pics of a shoot I did at downtown’s Culy Warehouse for Exquisite Weddings Magazine’s Fall issue. the super wedding coordination team of Aleah and Nick Valley conceived this unique Celebrating Friendship shoot, featuring creative ways to thank your bridesmaids and groomsmen. A couple of studio photos that I shot for the UC San Diego Health System branding campaign were recently applied on local billboards. There are a few others that are also running as full-page ads in various publications, but nothing beats motoring down the freeway and seeing your photograph huge!

Business as Usual

During a commercial assignment shoot, I’m often tasked with taking real people (i.e. non-professional models) and creating realistic, believable scenarios to support a marketing message or metaphor. To achieve this requires the ability to direct and coax them toward the desired image. Eye contact, gesture, stance, dialogue, pedestrian movement/timing, clothing details – these are some of the elements that I need to direct in order to coax the best from my subjects. There’s equipment issues. Strobe or not? Diffuser or reflector? Both? Telephoto or wide? And of course, there’s the ever-present task of coming up with an impacting composition and nailing the exposure. If I can make it fun for the participants as well, then all the better.

To illustrate the above, here are several examples from a recent shoot at the University of San Diego School of Business in preparation for their new MBA brochure.
