I’ll close our China experience with this post as I’m way overdue on portrait, wedding and assignment updates. And it’s all fun stuff that I’m looking forward to sharing with you all!

Having at last re-established our San Diego routine, I still catch myself drifting back to countless vignettes from our trip, many of them textured with smiles and laughter. We solidified our friendship with the Tong family long ago, and after spending three weeks attached at the hip, remarkably we’re still buds. We were bonded by purpose from the beginning: to reconnect our daughters with their home country. This trip was originally for them, yet ultimately it turned out to be for all of us. Traveling together can be a testimony to friendship. Surely we’ll grow old together, recounting this adventure as we grow old and gray. Our San Diego/San Francisco separation is an artificial one, easily bridged with weekend jaunts to each other’s home to simply hang out. Backyard grilling, hours of easy conversation, good scotch.

Below are several images of us being, well, us. Goofball tourists. Parents. Kids. Friends still.

Introducing River/Whisper/Myles/Picabo. His name is still to be determined, but we’ll nail it down soon. Sophie’s over the moon that we finally gave-in to her wish for a house pet that’s not confined to a cage. We promised her that upon our return from China we would have a family meeting to discuss the matter, and she pleaded her case (I promise I’ll be more responsible, I’ll keep my room clean, etc. etc. So pleeeezzz?). We visited a local shelter last Saturday and there he was, the featured pet on display in the main lobby’s pen. Love at first sight for Sophie. We spent time with three other kittens, each with their own lovable personality, but there was no denying that River/Whisper/Myles/Picabo was the one. Fortunately, we were queued ahead of another trailer-trash family with a bratty kid who was also eyeing him. When the little snot started banging on the acrylic walls to get the kitty’s attention, Sophie’s was eager to claim her pet ASAP.

At just three months old he’s a cute little tabby with broad white streaks crossing through his grey and white stripes. After exploring every nook and cranny in the house, he’s quite snuggly with all of us. So much so that he’s trying to walk over my keyboard as I write this post. I’m pretty sure he’s a Mac guy.

I’ve spent much of this week sludging through post-vacation administrative details, all the while struggling to stay coherent as I force my mind and body back into west coast time. And after the nearly three weeks in China, this is by far the most intensive case of jet lag I’ve ever experienced. Add to this nausea from being over-tired and reverting back to non-Chinese cuisine. Today, thankfully, I’ve gained back much of my groove and can actually concentrate fully on the images in front of me. Bring ‘em on.

After nearly three weeks in a timezone fifteen hours ahead of California, beating the subsequent jet lag is a bitch. I thought I cleared it last Sunday, but the disconnect between mind and body is recurring and it’s not been easy to focus on anything these past couple of days. But before I head home and hit the sofa once again, I wanted to share a few more beautiful images of life in Tongling. These images were taken as the afternoon light gave way to dusk.
